Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award at Haydock High School is committed to providing for young people an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development, which is of the highest quality and the widest reach.

The Duke Of Edinburgh Award is a challenging programme of activities through which young people can develop new skills, help others, experience adventure and will give them a great sense of achievement. What's more the The Award is widely recognised by employers and universities who have a high regard for the Award and what it says about you the young person achieving it.

When asked what they considered to be the most important activity undertaken in schools the Business Community ranked The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at the top of a list of 29 activities because of the importance they placed on candidates undertaking life skills and development activities.
The Award is also internationally recognised as the leading achievement award for young people.

What does the Programme Consist of?

It is a four Section Programme which involves:

  • VOLUNTEERING – Helping others in the community
  • SKILLS – Covering almost any hobby, skill or interest
  • PHYSICAL RECREATION – Sports, dance and fitness
  • EXPEDITIONS – Training for, planning and completing a
    journey on foot, cycle, horseback or water

With three progressive levels:

  • BRONZE – MINIMUM AGE 14 YEARS
  • SILVER – MINIMUM AGE 15 YEARS
  • GOLD – MINIMUM AGE 16 YEARS

- an awareness of their potential
- new talents and abilities
- an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses
- the ability to plan and use time effectively
- the ability to learn from and give to others in the community

- the ability to lead and work as part of a team
- and most importantly FUN

In the past five years we have supported over 400 young people through their Award.
We also support our young people in their bid for Gold on leaving Haydock High School.
